These early uses were then developed and applied to different engineering specifications.

The basis for development of new products and innovations was centered on alloy development and the physical and mechanical characteristics of a metal. Different processing methods such as molten metal, property development and solidification were being developed to help economy and to become reliable.

Currently, hundreds of aluminum alloy are being produced in compositions by different cast parts processes. Some of these processes include dry sand, plaster mold, permanent mold, die casting, counter gravity, tow-pressure casting, investment casting and other methods. Alloys are usually divided into two kinds, the ones that are good for gravity casting and those that can take the pressure in die casting. Material constraints are a factor in the process. However, advances in technique of foundry have proved to hinder the engineer’s alloy choice once a casting process has been chosen. For instance, alloys that were thought not usable in permanent molds because of their characteristics are in production by the said process.

There are different ways to cast aluminum parts. It can either be in liquid form, where one pours the liquidized aluminum into a cooled caster. There are some that uses belts in bringing the aluminum into its final shaping caster. However it is done, it is still an aluminum casting process. Aluminum is an element known for its light weight, ability to be molded into very thin strips, has a dimensional stability to be shaped in complex forms and resistant to corrosive materials. It also has high thermal and very efficient in conductivity. Lastly, aluminum remains strong even in very high temperature. It is not a surprise why aluminum is one of the commonly used metals for casting processes.

Aluminum casting process uses different aluminum casting parts for molding aluminum into desired shapes, either basic shapes or the more complex ones. There are different ways to reshape aluminum into something usable. The most traditional way is by pouring Aluminum liquid into a collar, or more commonly known as a caster. The collar has a specific shape where the liquid aluminum will be cooled and will eventually copy the shape of the caster used. There is also a method of casting which is called “strip casting” of plate. It is sort of similar to the traditional way, where liquidated Aluminum is poured in rollers or belts so that it goes on its destination to its final shape.

These processes are not as easy as they seem. Different precautions must be taken in the process of casting aluminum. Dissolved hydrogen in liquid aluminum is reduced to a low level. You can also add CI2 gas which would then eliminate solutes of alkali metal and some other inclusions. But before the use of these gases, they should be cleaned in a bag house to avoid environment destruction. If commercial aluminum is degassed and cast, there would be impurities and it would lead to stress and cracks.
